£10.8m Brent Cross interchange renewal gets under way

TfL has started work to strengthen the A41 Hendon Way flyover and reduce the risk of emergency closures.

Transport for London (TfL) has begun the first phase of a £10.8m project to strengthen and renew the Brent Cross Interchange in north London.

The scheme centres on the A41 Hendon Way flyover over the A406 North Circular Road, a strategic link between the two routes and an important connection for the Brent Cross and Hendon areas.

Phased traffic restrictions

TfL says the work is needed to maintain the structure’s long-term safety and reliability, while reducing the risk of unplanned emergency closures. The programme includes strengthening the flyover, replacing its safety barriers and installing a new waterproofing system.

Work will be delivered in phases, with traffic management introduced progressively. Initial activity is expected to include overnight closures on sections of the A41 and A406. Lane restrictions on Hendon Way are due to begin in October, followed by a contraflow on the flyover from 29 October.

The contraflow will reduce the road space available while structural work is carried out. TfL has warned that congestion could spread across the wider network, including the A41, A406 North Circular Road, A5 Edgware Road and A1.

Drivers making longer journeys are being advised to consider using the M25 to avoid the Brent Cross area where possible. TfL is also encouraging walking and cycling for shorter local trips.

The works will support the future return of heavy goods vehicles to the route. HGVs have been restricted from using the interchange since 2022 because of structural safety concerns.

The project forms part of TfL’s programme to maintain and renew London’s existing road infrastructure, with the investment intended to extend the life of the interchange and preserve its availability as a strategic route.
