A joint operation has removed 2.4 tonnes of litter from sections of the A45 in North Northamptonshire, with crews collecting 420 sacks during 12 night-time shifts.
North Northamptonshire Council worked with National Highways and Amey during August and September to clear verges, slip roads, central reservations and areas beside the carriageway.
Clean-up carried out during existing closures
The teams used overnight closures that National Highways had already put in place for repair and maintenance work. This allowed the litter clearance to take place without a separate closure dedicated to the operation.
The work covered several locations between Wilby Way and Raunds. Items collected included food wrappers, plastic drinks bottles and cigarette packets, according to the council.
Using existing traffic management gave the crews access to roadside areas that would otherwise have required work alongside live traffic or a separate closure. The organisations involved said they are looking for further opportunities to carry out litter clearances along the A45 and A14.
