Nottingham opens consultation on new Local Plan

Residents, businesses and community groups have until 28 October to help set priorities for the city’s future planning policies.

Nottingham City Council has launched the first formal consultation on a new Local Plan, asking people who live, work, study or invest in the city to help define its priorities.

The plan will guide future growth and regeneration and will be used when determining planning applications. It is expected to inform decisions covering new homes, jobs, transport infrastructure, the environment, heritage, health and climate change.

Early-stage consultation

The consultation does not set out a preferred strategy or identify development sites. Instead, the council is seeking views on the key issues and opportunities that should shape future planning policy.

The consultation is accompanied by a Strategic Environmental Assessment Scoping Report. It has also been informed by Nottingham City Vision, which sets out ambitions for healthy and diverse neighbourhoods, a thriving regional economy and a welcoming destination for business, culture, sport and visitors.

Councillor Jay Hayes, Nottingham City Council’s executive member for housing and planning, said: “The new Local Plan will play an important role in shaping Nottingham’s future.

“It will help us plan for new homes, jobs, transport, parks, community facilities and investment, while protecting the things that make Nottingham a great place to live, work and visit.

“We want to hear from residents, businesses, community groups and stakeholders at this early stage. This is an opportunity for people to tell us what issues they think the Local Plan should address and help shape the direction of future planning policies.”

How to respond

The consultation closes on Wednesday 28 October 2026. Consultation documents and an online response form are available through Nottingham City Council’s Local Plan review page.

People unable to use the online form can submit their views by email to localplan@nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
