Michael Roberts will retire as chief executive of London TravelWatch in Easter 2027, the independent watchdog for passengers in and around London has announced.
Roberts joined the organisation in January 2023. During his tenure, London TravelWatch has campaigned for improved bus, Tube and rail services, called for multi-year funding for Transport for London and pressed transport operators and policing authorities to do more to tackle hate crime and unwanted behaviour on the network.
The organisation also played a role in overturning plans to close rail ticket offices and withdraw the Day Travelcard.
Roberts said: “It has been a privilege to work with such dedicated people in the team, the London Assembly and the world of transport on the things which matter to the daily life of millions of Londoners. Our work as a watchdog is, of course, never done, and I wish London TravelWatch every success in the years ahead.”
Tricia Hayes, chair of London TravelWatch, said Roberts had been “a fantastic advocate for London’s travelling public” and should be “rightly proud” of what had been achieved under his leadership.
She added: “We will miss him hugely but wish him nothing but joy for the future.”
The recruitment process for Roberts’ successor will begin later in the autumn.
