Yorkshire construction starts fall as contract awards surge

Project-starts in Yorkshire and the Humber declined sharply in August against the previous three months, while main contract awards rose strongly.

Construction project-starts in Yorkshire and the Humber fell sharply in August 2026 compared with the preceding three months, according to regional data from Glenigan published by Construction News.

Starts were also marginally lower than in the same period a year earlier, indicating continued weakness in the flow of new work across the region.

Contract awards increase

The downturn in project-starts contrasted with a strong rise in main contract awards. Awards increased substantially against both the previous three-month period and the equivalent period in 2025.

The figures suggest that projects progressing through the contracting process did not translate into an equivalent increase in schemes reaching site during the month.

Planning approvals remain below 2025 level

Detailed planning approvals rose compared with the preceding quarter, but remained below the level recorded a year earlier.

The data covers construction activity in Yorkshire and the Humber during August 2026, including project-starts, main contract awards and detailed planning approvals.
