Wiltshire completes first major phase of £6.98m A3102 safety scheme

Work at the Calne bypass and Stanier Road junction is complete, with further A3102 improvements planned at Bromham and in southern Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Council has completed the first major phase of its £6.98m A3102 Safer Road Scheme, with work at the junction of the A3102 Calne bypass and Stanier Road now finished.

Funded by the Department for Transport through the Safer Roads Fund, the programme covers the route between junction 16 of the M4 and Melksham. The A3102 was identified as having a high number of fatal and serious collisions, prompting measures intended to reduce both the likelihood and severity of crashes.

Further junction works planned

Work at the A3102/A342 junctions at Bromham is due to begin in October 2026 and finish by December. The proposals include a new island junction to make right turns safer for A3102 traffic, carriageway widening, a formalised pedestrian crossing and improvements to the A3102 approach.

A third major site, at the southern A3102/A342 junction, is scheduled to start in early 2027. It will include a new roundabout, safety improvements to the right-turn lane for traffic entering the A3102, removal of the existing non-standard right-turn island and a reduction in the speed limit to 50mph.

Other measures along the route include upgraded road markings and signs, junction improvements, pedestrian and cycle crossing enhancements, vegetation clearance to improve visibility and new shared-use paths. The council said these interventions were selected through detailed road safety analysis.

The scheme forms part of Wiltshire Council’s commitment to the Vision Zero ambition shared by the Wiltshire and Swindon Road Safety Partnership, which seeks to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the area’s roads.

David Bullock, Wiltshire Council’s director of assets, highways and transport, said: “The completion of the first major phase of the A3102 Safer Road Scheme is an important milestone in our ongoing work to improve road safety across Wiltshire.

“The improvements at the Calne bypass and Stanier Road junction, alongside the wider measures being introduced along the route, are designed to reduce the risk of serious collisions and make journeys safer for everyone who uses the A3102.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to Vision Zero and our ambition to create safer roads and stronger communities, supporting the priorities in Our Wiltshire Plan to create safer journeys and maintain a high-quality road network.”
