ORR approves Salford Crescent station upgrades

A new 157m platform, lift, footbridge extension and gateline have been authorised as part of a £21m improvement project.

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has authorised improvements at Salford Crescent station, including a new platform designed to improve passenger movements and train operations.

The regulator has approved the 157m-long Platform 3, which will include a canopy and seating. The works also include an extension to the existing footbridge, a new lift and a gateline next to the current station building.

Project began in 2025

The upgrades form part of a £21m project that began in March 2025. Once brought into use, the new platform is expected to improve passenger flow and reduce delays by providing greater flexibility for services travelling through central Manchester and beyond.

The ORR said it worked closely with Network Rail and the wider project team during the authorisation process, including checks and surveys required before the infrastructure can be used.

Steve Fletcher, the ORR’s deputy director of engineering and asset management, said the authorisation was an important step towards opening the new platform at the busy station.

“We’re pleased to have played our part in getting the improvements ready to be put into use. Our team worked closely with Network Rail to support them through the authorisation process, just as we do for new trains and infrastructure across the country.”
