Khan calls for London-wide rental e-bike licensing framework

The Mayor of London is urging the Department for Transport to introduce legislation allowing a consistent approach to rental e-bikes across the capital.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is pressing the Department for Transport to bring forward secondary legislation that would enable a licensing framework for rental e-bikes across London.

The proposed system would replace the current borough-by-borough arrangements with what Khan described as a “clear, consistent framework”.

Framework would address parking and safety

According to Khan, the framework would help London authorities manage the number of rental e-bikes operating in the capital, improve safety and parking, and strengthen connections with public transport.

It would also support data sharing for compliance and transport planning, the Mayor said.

Legislation still required

The plans depend on the Department for Transport introducing the necessary secondary legislation. Until then, arrangements for rental e-bikes remain subject to individual borough approaches.

Khan’s intervention comes ahead of the proposed legislative change and seeks to establish a single framework covering London rather than separate local systems.
