Alstom has agreed a 15-year extension to its Train Services Agreement with Greater Anglia, in a contract valued at approximately £800m (€947m).
The deal covers the operator’s fleet of 133 five-car Class 720 Aventra electric multiple units, which Alstom will continue to maintain at Greater Anglia’s Seven Kings depot. The trains support commuter and regional services across the operator’s network.
Maintenance and reliability work
The agreement includes planned maintenance, major overhauls, unplanned repairs, fault rectification and materials supply. It also provides for reliability improvement work intended to maximise fleet availability and support Greater Anglia’s operational requirements.
The contract supports around 100 roles at Alstom. The company said the Class 720 fleet has achieved more than 40,000 miles per technical incident in recent periods, exceeding its contractual requirements. In 2024, the fleet received a Silver Spanner award at the Modern Railways Fourth Friday Club Golden Spanners Awards after recording a 98.4% year-on-year improvement.
“We are delighted to extend our partnership with Greater Anglia through this long-term maintenance agreement for the Alstom-built Class 720 fleet,” said Steve Harvey, Services Director UK and Ireland at Alstom.
Harvey said the agreement showed how owners, operators and manufacturers could work together to secure whole-life outcomes for passengers and taxpayers. The contract is intended to provide a long-term framework for Alstom, Greater Anglia and future Great British Railways to collaborate on performance, reliability and passenger experience.
Martin Beable, Chief Operating Officer at GBR Anglia, said: “Greater Anglia is pleased to confirm this new 15-year maintenance agreement with Alstom for our fleet of Class 720 trains. We’re looking forward to working with Alstom and Angel Trains to build on the major improvements in service and reliability these new trains have already been delivering for our customers and communities.”
The fleet, financed and owned by Angel Trains, was ordered in 2016 and entered service progressively over five years. All 133 units are now operational. They were built at Alstom’s Derby Litchurch Lane Works, where the company has produced 2,660 Aventra cars for UK customers since 2015.
Alstom said the order will be booked in the third quarter of its 2026/27 financial year.
