EMR to launch rail apprenticeship pilot in January 2027

East Midlands Railway will offer 17 to 25-year-olds a 12-month route into rail through workplace experience and structured learning.

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is preparing to launch an apprenticeship pilot aimed at creating a new entry route into the rail industry for young people.

The operator, which is run by Transport UK, is working with industry partners including DfTO and Network Rail on the GBR Rail Foundation Apprenticeship. The first cohort is expected to begin in January 2027.

Broad introduction to rail careers

The programme will be open to people aged 17 to 25. Over 12 months, participants will combine workplace experience with structured, off-the-job learning and an introduction to careers across the railway.

EMR said apprentices will develop skills and knowledge in railway operations, safety and security, customer service, performance, and health, wellbeing and resilience. The pilot is also intended to build employability skills, technical knowledge and workplace behaviours.

Successful participants will be able to progress to further rail apprenticeships or permanent employment, according to EMR.

Part of wider talent programme

Neil Grabham, interim managing director of East Midlands Railway, said: “We want to make a career in rail accessible to more young people and give them the opportunity to discover the wide range of careers available across our industry.

“This pilot is an exciting opportunity to combine meaningful, hands-on experience with structured learning, helping young people build confidence, develop valuable skills and understand what it means to work in the railway.

“We’re proud to be working with industry partners to develop this new pathway and look forward to welcoming our first cohort next year.”

EMR said the pilot will complement its existing apprenticeship programme, which includes opportunities in areas such as train driving and passenger transport operations. The operator said the new scheme forms part of its wider commitment to developing future talent and creating opportunities for people from a broad range of backgrounds.
