Camden and Islington councils have started the procurement process for a single operator to deliver at least 1,100 lamp-column electric vehicle charge points across the two boroughs.
The successful charge point operator will be responsible for supplying, installing, operating, maintaining and, if required, decommissioning the equipment. Camden is seeking a minimum of 500 charge points, while Islington requires at least 600.
Joint procurement
The councils are procuring the service together as London Partnership 1. The partnership approach is required under the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme and is intended to provide greater scale and encourage operator investment.
A single operator will be appointed for both boroughs, although separate contracts will be signed with Camden and Islington.
The capital costs will be funded through £1.212m of LEVI funding, with the operator covering costs above that amount. Camden’s capital works will also include 500 new lamp columns for the charge points, expected to be delivered through the council’s existing public realm maintenance and improvement contracts.
15-year contract
The contract is scheduled to run from 1 September 2027 to 31 August 2042. Its estimated value is £42.2m excluding VAT, or £50.64m including VAT, according to the procurement notice.
