Haringey plans segregated cycle lanes on Green Lanes and St Ann’s Road

Public engagement is due to begin before Christmas 2026, with a wider programme of safer cycling routes planned across the borough.

Haringey Council is preparing plans for new cycle lanes on Green Lanes and St Ann’s Road as the first stage of a two- to three-year programme to expand safer cycling routes across the London borough.

Public engagement on the Green Lanes proposals is expected to start with an open meeting before Christmas 2026. The scheme could include an extended bus lane, a segregated cycle lane and other changes to the road. Formal engagement will follow, while consultation on a cycle lane for St Ann’s Road is due to begin in early 2027.

Focus on high-risk roads

The council said it had identified some of Haringey’s busiest and most dangerous roads for investment, following concerns about injuries and deaths in traffic collisions.

Council leader Cllr Mark Blake said: “We promised at the local elections that we would start building proper cycle lanes in Haringey – and we’re keeping that promise. We have to deal with how unsafe it is to cycle in the borough.

“We’re in a climate crisis and we need to do everything we can to improve the alternatives to cars. Building cycle lanes is one of the best things we can do locally.”

Where dedicated cycle lanes cannot be provided because of space constraints, the council said it would look at improving cycling conditions through enhanced bus lanes. It said these measures could give greater priority to sustainable transport and reduce conflicts with general traffic.

Wider street improvements

Future schemes are also expected to consider zebra crossings, upgraded bus stops, urban greening and other public-realm improvements alongside cycling infrastructure.

The announcement follows Haringey’s recent commitment to invest £10 million in new bus routes across the borough. The council said its wider objective was to create safer streets for people travelling by foot, bicycle, bus, motorcycle or car.
