Believ has continued its partnership with Luton Council by installing 10 Standard Plus electric vehicle charge points in council-owned residential car parks.
The chargers are ready for use and are intended to support residents without off-street parking, a group that represents around a third of Luton’s residents. The network can be expanded as demand increases.
Accessible charging provision
The charge points comply with PAS 1899, the standard for accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure. They have been installed in the carriageway, with ground-level hatching intended to make them easier to use.
Believ is funding the project and is responsible for planning, installation, operation and ongoing maintenance.
Guy Bartlett, chief executive of Believ, said: “By expanding the network, we’re helping more residents make the switch. It will also help reduce road transport emissions and support cleaner air for all across the community.”
Part of Luton’s net-zero plans
The partnership forms part of Luton Council’s wider sustainability strategy, which targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The strategy includes expanding residential charging hubs, moving the council fleet and public transport to electric vehicles, and achieving a 100% low-carbon airport fleet by 2030.
Cllr Adrees Latif, portfolio holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said the new points were the first installed specifically to support residents living in council housing.
“Access to convenient EV charging is an important part of supporting residents who want to make the switch to an electric vehicle, but who may not have their own driveway or off-street parking,” Latif said.
“This is part of our wider work to improve EV charging provision across Luton and support residents in making more sustainable travel choices. We will continue to look at opportunities to expand the charging network and make it easier for more people to make the transition to electric vehicles.”
