Two travel safe officers have been praised for rescuing a passenger who fell beneath a train at Lea Green station.
Josh Chegwin, 33, and Neil Lewis, 44, were getting off a Northern service when they heard a loud bang. Chegwin alerted the guard and helped stop the train, while Lewis reached down and pulled the passenger up by his jacket.
The officers, who are employed by Amulet Security to patrol Northern trains and stations, said the man had suffered a head injury and was crawling beneath the train. They directed him away from danger while another train was due to pass on the opposite track.
Passenger given first aid
Chegwin and Lewis took the passenger to the ticket office, where they administered first aid and stayed with him after he declined an ambulance.
“We were all quite shook up, but I’m just glad we were there to help,” Chegwin said.
The incident took place in December 2025. The two officers were subsequently nominated for a Lifesaver Award at the 2026 RailStaff Awards, although they did not reach the final shortlist.
Paul Bennett, Northern’s safety and environment director, said: “We’re incredibly proud of Josh and Neil, as they reacted quickly and remained calm under pressure to get an injured passenger to safety.”
He added that travel safe officers patrol Northern’s network throughout the year and said customer safety remained the operator’s “top priority”.
