Khan opposes Heathrow third runway over transport and environmental risks

The London mayor says the Government’s draft expansion policy relies on outdated evidence and could worsen air quality, noise and pressure on transport networks.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has formally opposed plans for a third runway at Heathrow, warning that the expansion could have adverse effects on transport networks and undermine environmental objectives.

Khan said he was “deeply concerned” about the potential impact on air quality, noise pollution, transport networks and environmental targets.

Concerns over evidence base

The mayor criticised the Government’s draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement (HENPS), arguing that it relies on outdated evidence.

According to Khan, the evidence base “fails to take into account the urgent challenges we face today”.

His opposition comes as the Government considers the policy framework for expanding airport capacity at Heathrow.
