Liverpool to begin £12m Vauxhall Road cycle scheme

Survey work is due to start on 28 October ahead of a project adding segregated cycling, crossings and resurfacing along more than 2km of Vauxhall Road.

Liverpool City Council is due to begin work on a £12m upgrade of Vauxhall Road on Wednesday 28 October, with construction expected to continue into 2028.

The scheme will cover more than 2km between Tithebarn Street and Sandhills Lane. It includes a fully segregated cycle lane, upgraded footpaths, new pedestrian crossings, carriageway resurfacing and drainage improvements.

Survey work to begin under lane closures

Initial surveys will be carried out under lane closures, with the council advising drivers to allow extra time and consider alternative routes. Later phases are expected to require temporary traffic management, including road closures and diversion routes.

New crossings are planned at junctions including Leeds Street, Burlington Street, Boundary Street and Sandhills Lane. Liverpool City Council said it would provide further information about work phases and traffic management as the project progresses, alongside public engagement events for residents, businesses and road users.

The council says the improvements are intended to reduce collisions and make the route safer and more accessible for people walking, wheeling, cycling, using public transport or travelling by car.

Scheme forms part of regional active travel plan

Initial proposals were presented to residents in September 2024, when 81% of respondents supported them. The project is part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

A council officer decision in July 2025 approved a procurement exercise to appoint a contractor. That decision estimated the project at £11m excluding VAT and allowed up to 18 months for the construction contract. The council has not named the contractor or published a detailed phasing plan.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said: “We are committed to investing in key routes on our road network right across the city to make them safer and more accessible for everyone to use. The improvements on Vauxhall Road will give people more choice in how they travel, whether that’s walking, wheeling, cycling, or using public transport. And for those who continue to travel by car, better-designed junctions, clearer crossings and fully segregated cycle lanes mean safer, more predictable journeys for all road users.”
