London school-run car journeys fall 16%, TfL data shows

An average of 73,915 fewer car trips are made to schools each day than a decade ago, while 66% of primary school-aged children used active travel in 2024/25.

Car journeys to schools in London have fallen by 16% over the past decade, according to new figures from Transport for London (TfL).

The reduction equates to an average of 73,915 fewer car trips on each school day compared with ten years ago. The London Mayor said changes to the school run had also helped improve air quality.

Active travel

TfL data shows that 66% of primary school-aged children travelled to school using active travel in 2024/25.

More than 196,000 children have received free cycle training through TfL’s Bikeability programme, supporting efforts to increase cycling among younger Londoners.

The figures were published as the Mayor highlighted changes in travel behaviour around schools and their potential contribution to cleaner air and healthier journeys.
