M Group has launched its first Sustainability Strategy alongside its FY2026 ESG Report, setting targets for emissions, fleet electrification, workforce development and ESG reporting.
The five-year strategy follows the group’s first Double Materiality Assessment, conducted with independent sustainability advisers ERM. It is organised around three pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Social Responsibility and Trusted Operations.
M Group’s Operations Board has endorsed the strategy. Each of its seven material outcomes has a named executive owner and will sit within the group’s risk and assurance processes, with progress to be reported annually.
Emissions and fleet targets
By FY30, M Group aims to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% against its FY22 baseline. It also plans to reduce Scope 3 emissions intensity per pound of value added by 51.6%.
The fleet commitments for the same year include moving to an all-electric company car fleet, making 80% of operational cars hybrid and having around 20% of vans electric.
Other targets include achieving at least 80% colleague engagement by FY29, providing five annual training days for field colleagues and seven for non-field colleagues, and increasing apprenticeships to more than 6% of the workforce.
M Group is targeting an EcoVadis Silver rating by the end of FY27. It also plans to report ESG progress annually and align its reporting with the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards, with external assurance over key data by FY30.
FY2026 performance
The accompanying report records a 20.7% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions against the FY22 baseline. M Group said carbon intensity had fallen from 50 to 16 tonnes of CO2e per £1m of turnover since 2020.
The group’s EcoVadis score rose from 56 to 64, resulting in its first Bronze medal and a position in the top 35% of companies globally. M Group’s Technology and Communications division received a Silver medal, awarded to companies in the top 15% of those assessed by EcoVadis in the 12 months before the medal was issued.
M Group said it invested £7.5m in training during FY2026, with 87 graduates and 642 apprentices on programmes. It recorded zero work-related fatalities, while accident and lost-time injury rates were below industry averages. The group also reported at least £75m in social value and said 1,098 supply chain partners had been evaluated and approved.
Andrew Findlay, M Group chief executive, said: “We support the country’s critical regulated businesses to deliver vital services for communities across the UK, and they need like-minded partners who can help them deliver their binding environmental commitments. Our ambition is simple: to leave things better than we found them – better infrastructure, better careers and a better business for those who come after us.”
Andrew Hunt, M Group’s director of ESG and innovation, said: “The report shows how we’ve performed; the strategy sets out where we’re going. Each material outcome has an owner and a measurable target or milestone, and we’ll report progress every year. This is the direction our business is heading, will measure, and be held accountable to.”
