Next-generation London black cab due to launch in 2027

LEVC says its new taxi will launch in the UK during the second half of 2027, replacing the TX range-extended electric model.

London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has confirmed that its next-generation black cab will launch in the UK during the second half of 2027.

The vehicle is being engineered from the ground up to meet Transport for London’s Metropolitan Conditions of Fitness. It will replace the TX range-extended electric taxi, which entered service in 2018.

Design development under way

LEVC has released early design sketches showing an evolution of the traditional black cab silhouette. The company said the new model would focus on design, technology, accessibility, usability and durability, although full technical specifications have not yet been published.

Environmental performance and air quality are also central to the development programme. LEVC said it has sold more than 12,000 TX taxis worldwide and that the model’s eCity powertrain has prevented more than 450 million kilograms of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. The company also said the TX had reduced nitrogen oxide emissions from London’s taxi fleet by 60%.

LEVC said the new taxi was being developed for drivers, passengers, fleet operators and cities, building on partnerships established over the past decade. Geely Group, which owns LEVC, has invested more than £1 billion in the company’s development since 2013, according to LEVC.

Tony Chi, chief executive of LEVC, said: “For more than a century, LEVC has been at the heart of urban mobility, and the black cab remains one of the most trusted and recognisable transport solutions in the world. Today’s announcement marks an important milestone as we confirm that the next chapter is already well underway.

“Our next-generation taxi will honour everything drivers and passengers value about the current TX, while taking a significant step forward in design, innovation and sustainability. We know how important the future of the black cab is to our partners and we want to reassure them that LEVC is fully committed to the future of this sector.”
