No trains to or from Birmingham New Street over Christmas for £13m upgrade

Engineering work on overhead power lines will suspend rail services at Birmingham New Street from 24 to 28 December 2026.

There will be no train services to or from Birmingham New Street from Thursday 24 December to Monday 28 December 2026 while Network Rail carries out a £13m upgrade of the station’s overhead power lines.

The work will renew complex sections of wiring on the approaches to and through the station. Much of the equipment dates from the 1960s and is being replaced as part of a programme designed to improve railway reliability.

Three-year programme

The Christmas 2026 closure is the first phase of a three-year programme, with further engineering work planned over the Christmas periods in 2027 and 2028.

Network Rail said the scale of the work meant journeys would take longer and could involve dedicated rail-replacement buses or local bus services. Transport partners and train operators are working on alternative travel arrangements.

“Birmingham New Street is at the heart of the rail network, supporting millions of local, regional and national journeys every year,” said Martin Colmey, route director for Network Rail’s Central route.

“Much of the overhead line equipment dates back to the 1960s and needs to be replaced. This £13m investment has been carefully planned to make the railway more reliable.”

Colmey said Christmas had been chosen to reduce the impact where possible, while acknowledging that the work would affect journeys during an important period for passengers. He urged people to plan ahead once Christmas tickets become available.

Station building to remain open

Although trains will not operate, the Birmingham New Street station building will remain open. Passengers will still be able to access shops, including Grand Central, and the wider city centre.

Station facilities such as the assisted travel lounge and toilets will also remain available, with staff on hand each day to provide assistance.

Further information on alternative travel, journey times, replacement buses and other transport options will be published at nationalrail.co.uk/newstreetclosure once plans are finalised. Christmas timetables are expected to be available online from early October.
