North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has published a rail vision setting out proposals intended to improve the region’s rail network through to 2040.
The Mayor’s Rail Vision was discussed by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority cabinet last week. McGuinness said the document would provide a “roadmap” for transforming rail in the North East.
Focus on fares, services and stations
The vision includes plans for more affordable and simpler fares, more frequent and reliable services, modern and accessible stations, and improved safety.
McGuinness said: “Devolution is our chance to finally transform how the rail system is run and to make it far more affordable for local people.”
The document places rail improvements within the wider powers available to the region’s devolved administration. The source material does not give a timetable, funding package or confirmed delivery plan for the individual projects referenced in the vision.
