Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet has agreed to progress the next construction phase of improvements to the A40 between Eynsham and Oxford.
The approved section runs between Eynsham Park and Ride and Cassington. Planned works include bus priority measures, junction improvements, new crossings and infrastructure for walking, wheeling and cycling.
Duke’s Cut work paused for further assessment
Work at Duke’s Cut bridge will not proceed at the same time while the council carries out further investigations. These will examine the bridge’s structural maintenance requirements, potential cost reductions and possible funding options.
Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Construction and Repair, Councillor Liz Leffman, said the council remained committed to improving journeys and supporting more sustainable travel choices.
“The decision means we can move ahead with the main improvements while taking a responsible approach to the more complex work at Duke’s Cut bridge,” she said.
“We need to make sure that we fully understand the work required, the costs and the risks before committing further public money to that section of the scheme.”
Leffman added that pausing the Duke’s Cut element did not mean it had been abandoned, and that bus priority at the location remained important.
Main construction is expected to start in early spring 2027 and continue for at least two years.
