Rhondda Cynon Taf approves £9.5m highways and transport boost

The south Wales council will fund resurfacing, footway repairs and development work on two major transport schemes.

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council is investing an additional £9.5 million in highways and transport projects across the south Wales authority area.

The funding is part of a wider £12.13 million package approved by the council’s cabinet and full council. It will support road and footway maintenance, flood alleviation and the development of two major transport schemes.

Maintenance and transport corridors

About £3.5 million will fund 28 additional road resurfacing schemes and 15 extra footway repairs, as well as surface planning, intermediate repairs and patching.

A further £3 million has been allocated to the Llanharan Sustainable Transport Corridor. The proposed 4km scheme is intended to address congestion, road safety, goods vehicle movements and air quality along the A473 through Llanharan, and will include a dedicated walking and cycling route. A planning application was submitted in April.

The Cynon Gateway Link Road will receive £3 million for design and development. The proposed 1.2km road would connect the A4059 Aberdare Bypass with the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, improving north-south connectivity and helping to tackle congestion in areas including Llwydcoed.

According to the council, the link road would also support wider economic development in the region. The process of appointing a main contractor has begun, with detailed design work expected to start next year.

Additional works

The wider funding package includes £250,000 for flood alleviation measures and £150,000 for improvements to unadopted roads.
