ScotRail to deploy data platform to investigate recurring delays

The Incremental Solutions system will analyse minor delay patterns, train interactions and timetable performance across Scotland’s railway.

ScotRail is to deploy Incremental Solutions’ full Operational Intelligence Suite to identify the underlying causes of recurring delays across Scotland’s railway.

Funded by Transport Scotland through the Targeted Performance Fund, the platform will help ScotRail examine sub-threshold delays that may not be captured through conventional delay attribution.

Analysing network performance

The system will combine high-resolution operational data with timetable information, Train Describer data and advanced analytics. ScotRail’s performance teams will be able to investigate unexplained recurring delays, train interactions at junctions and the cumulative effect of minor disruptions.

It will also measure headways, dwell-time variation and train separation, supporting operational and timetable changes based on evidence. Incremental said the suite is designed to give performance, planning, control and safety teams a consistent way to examine complex operational issues.

Tim Flower, chief revenue officer at Incremental, said: “We’re incredibly proud to have been selected by ScotRail for this important programme. This project represents exactly the type of challenge Incremental was created to solve—helping railway operators transform large volumes of operational data into practical insight that improves performance.

“We look forward to working closely with ScotRail to deliver a capability that supports evidence-based decision making and contributes to a more reliable railway for passengers.”

Incremental said the deployment builds on its portfolio of operational intelligence systems used across the UK rail industry, including applications for performance analysis, real-time train positioning and operational decision support.
