Siemens Mobility secures 102-locomotive Vectron X orders

Railpool has ordered up to 100 Vectron X locomotives, while RDC Deutschland will use two electro-diesel versions on services to Sylt from summer 2027.

Siemens Mobility has secured orders for up to 102 locomotives from leasing company Railpool and operator RDC Deutschland for its newly launched Vectron X platform.

The orders were announced at InnoTrans 2026. Railpool has placed a firm order for 30 electric Vectron X locomotives and 50 Vectron X Dual Mode locomotives, with an option for a further 20. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2027.

Railpool expands into electro-diesel fleet

The order will be the first time Railpool has added electro-diesel locomotives to its Vectron fleet. It will also make the company the first customer for selected Vectron X digital functions, including the core digital package and standardised application programming interfaces for connecting additional applications and services.

Railpool CEO Torsten Lehnert said: “having been the launch customer for the Vectron locomotive in 2010, it is particularly special for us to now also become the first customer for the new Vectron X generation.”

He added that Railpool customers would “benefit from the most modern and reliable ‘Locomotive as a Service’ offering on the market.”

The latest deal brings Railpool’s total Vectron order to 325 locomotives. The new trains will have a power output at the wheel of 2,400 kW under 15 kV 16.7 Hz overhead power and 2,000 kW in diesel mode. They will have a 2,600-litre diesel tank, a maximum operating speed of 160 km/h and train power supply capability. Siemens Mobility also offers a version compatible with both 15 kV 16.7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz systems.

RDC order targets Sylt services

RDC Deutschland has separately ordered two Vectron X Dual Mode locomotives in a deal worth approximately €10m. The operator plans to use them from summer 2027 on its Autozug Sylt car-carrying shuttle services across the causeway to the North Sea island, as well as on electrified services to Hamburg.

RDC said the electro-diesel configuration would provide operational flexibility, reduce fuel consumption and save approximately 275 tonnes of CO₂ a year.

Siemens Mobility describes Vectron X as a software-defined locomotive platform designed as an open digital system, with the driver’s cab intended to function as a connected workplace. Its digital ecosystem includes an “App Store” through which operators can add functions such as Remote Start, Vectron Eco Cruise and Trainplay.

The platform also provides structured vehicle data through standardised interfaces, alongside condition monitoring and maintenance co-ordination intended to support availability and predictive maintenance.
