Somerset Council’s Executive has approved a Local Transport Delivery Plan setting out more than £283 million of government funding for transport infrastructure and services between 2026 and 2030.
The plan is required by the Department for Transport as a condition of accessing funding. It provides the framework for transport improvements across the county over the next four years.
Road and active travel projects
The programme includes local contributions towards a proposed replacement for the B3191 Cleeve Hill Road serving Watchet and repairs at Ansford Hill. Somerset Council has submitted funding bids for both schemes.
It also includes proposed improvements to the A38, including work at Edithmead Roundabout, which is the subject of a further grant bid.
The revised plan provides for increased investment in road safety schemes and public rights of way, as well as support for improved bus services and better access to sustainable travel options.
Somerset Council said the investment is intended to improve connections to employment, education, healthcare and other services, while supporting safer and more sustainable travel.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Executive Lead Member for Highways and Transport, said: “This plan sets out how we can make the best use of significant government investment to improve transport across Somerset.
“It supports a wide range of projects, from maintaining and improving our road network to investing in bus services, active travel and major strategic schemes.
“Our aim is to make it easier for people to travel safely and reliably, connect communities and support Somerset’s economy while creating more sustainable travel opportunities for the future.”
