Suffolk approves £63m A12 upgrade

The scheme covers the A12 between the A12/A14 Seven Hills junction and Woods Lane, north of Woodbridge.

Suffolk County Council has unanimously approved a £63m upgrade of the A12 between the A12/A14 Seven Hills junction and Woods Lane, north of Woodbridge.

The decision was made on 20 October. The scheme is intended to improve connectivity, ease congestion and strengthen road safety for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users.

New footbridge and bus link

Plans include replacing the Martlesham footbridge with a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. A new bus link junction will also be built north of Anson Road.

Other elements include maintenance bays, upgraded traffic signals and improved pedestrian crossings.

Christopher Hudson, cabinet member for transport and highways at Suffolk County Council, said: “This scheme will provide significant infrastructure improvements and is an investment in our county.

“It will improve the resilience of the local road network as congestion is already a problem, especially at peak periods, and will also improve connectivity to the regions’ ports and support the visitor economy.”

The plans were developed after two rounds of public consultation. The scheme was first proposed in 2020.
