Tyne Tunnels fire system activated in live vehicle blaze

The MIST water-mist system suppressed a vehicle fire in the southbound tunnel before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

The Tyne Tunnels’ automated fire suppression system has been activated in a live incident for the first time after a vehicle caught fire in the southbound tunnel on Saturday 24 October.

Operator TT2 said its MIST system operated as designed, suppressing the fire and controlling conditions in the tunnel before Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service crews arrived.

Incident resolved within an hour

TT2’s on-site first response team worked with the emergency services to manage the incident and remove the vehicle safely. The operator said the incident was resolved within an hour, with no reported injuries and no requirement for North East Ambulance Service attendance.

The fixed fire suppression system uses high-pressure water mist to help control fires and limit their spread. It is installed in both tunnel bores and can target the affected fire zone and adjacent zones during an incident.

TT2 said the event highlighted the importance of continued investment in tunnel safety systems and their maintenance. The operator also thanked its operational delivery team and the emergency services involved in the response.

According to TT2, the tunnels receive no funding from local authorities or central government, making toll revenue essential to maintaining the infrastructure and its safety systems.
